Help Finding the Right Wedding Photographer

The 4Ps

One of the questions you’ll be asking as you plan your wedding is, how do I find a good photographer? Some people will simply ask friends for referrals, others will use the venue’s preferred suppliers. I originally wrote this post for the wedding blog Off to Wed, helping brides find a photographer and it was all about the 3 Ps but I’ve fattened this advice up a bit, now it’s the 4 Ps of finding a wedding photographer.

  1. PRICE
  2. PICTURES
  3. PERSONALITY
  4. PROBLEM SOLVING

1. PRICE – Let’s face it weddings are expensive so you have to work towards a budget. But, don’t just choose the cheapest photographer you find – you get what you pay for. Set a budget range and research photographers within that price bracket. You generally get what you pay for but you need to figure out what you can afford. If you’ve found a photographer that will shoot your wedding for £500 or less then you probably shouldn’t expect too much, whereas the photographer charging £5,000 will probably be amazing but the question is can you afford it.

2. PICTURES – The wedding photographs are pretty important, right. When searching for a photographer, make sure that you have a good look at their website and albums to ensure that you like the style. Apart from the quality of the pictures themselves, take time to see what sort of shots your photographer takes- try and find someone that captures the natural moments and knows how to take posed shots that don’t look awkward. Also speak to the photographer about his style to see if it sounds like the sort of thing you’re looking for.

3. PERSONALITY – Personality can sometimes get overlooked. There’s no point finding a photographer who takes great images and comes in under budget if you don’t get along. Make sure that you have a consultation. You’re going to spend all day with your photographer so you need to get along. You don’t have to be BFFs but somebody that you like and will make a good impression with your guests is a must.

4. PROBLEM SOLVING – As with all creative endeavours photography is about problem solving. The problem is finding new and interesting shots so that your wedding looks different to your friends and families albums. Solving this problem is all about looking at things differently, being inventive and finding shots that will make you say wow when you see them. Not all photographers will do this, some will be happy to repeat the same format for every wedding but don’t just settle for a lazy photographer find an interesting photographer who’s pictures will excite you.
